Fan Fiction

Below are the possible subcategories for the 2008 awards, depending on the number of nominations available for each area. You can find definitions for each of these in the Definitions area of this site.

Each of the following major categories for fan fiction may contain the following subcategories:

Character - Stories that focus primarily on one character.
Duet - Stories that focus equally on 2 team members.
Team - Stories that focus equally on 3 or more team members functioning as a unit.

Subcategories

Action/Adventure
Stories containing plots that involve fighting, interplanetary intrigue, or other dangerous activities.

Alternate Universe
Works that involve Stargate characters but set outside the Stargate Universe. Any work featuring or set in a world significantly different from the show's canon. These works make no mention of the Stargate or Stargate Command.

Angst
Works that are emotionally wrenching or works where a character deals with an emotionally distressing situation.

DarkFic
Stories that explore the darker sides of the characters, or stories featuring extreme violence, abuse or rape (non-con). Non-con stories must be placed in DarkFic if the non-consensual sex is the primary element of the plot. Stories where the non-con is a minor element may be placed in another appropriate category that better represents the main plot element.

Drama
Stories containing a state, situation, or series of events involving interesting or intense conflict of forces.

Episode-Based
Episode-Based stories can include missing scenes or episode tags.

Missing scenes are based within, after, or around actual episodes of the show.
Episode tags directly follow the last scene of an episode but do not contradict future episode canon.
Humor
Stories must depict humor as the primary element of the plot.

Hurt/Comfort
Works where a character is injured and receives comfort from others.

KidFic
Works where a character has become a child.

Pre-ship/UST (Category found in Ship only)
Pre-Ship works reflect situations where two main characters are coming to terms with each other. Their characters don't progress into a sexual relationship during the story, but implies that they will become intimate after the story ends.
Unresolved Sexual Tension (UST) works reflect situations where two main characters care deeply for each other but are unable to have an intimate relationship, generally due to extenuating circumstances (ie, military regulations). These characters never move into a sexual relationship.
Pre-slash/UST (Category found in Slash and Femslash only.)
Preslash works reflect situations where two main characters are coming to terms with their feelings for each other. These characters don't progress into a sexual relationship during the current story but it implies that they will become intimate directly after the story ends.
Unresolved Sexual Tension (UST) works reflect situations where two main characters care deeply for each other but are unable to have an intimate relationship, generally due to extenuating circumstances (ie, military regulations). These characters never move into a sexual relationship.
PWP/Kink
Works are for mature audiences only.

PWP - Plot? What Plot? are stories are mostly about sex with no real plot either within or without the Stargate Universe. These stories focus on the sex or sexual situation alone.
Kink stories focus on aspects of sexuality that fall outside the norm (including, but not limited to, BDSM, sexual role play games, orgies, sex toys, etc.).
Romance
Works that portray a romantic relationship between characters. These characters could be male/male, female/female, or male/female.

Works focus on the romantic situation and may or may not involve sex but the sex is a minor part of the overall plot. These works contain Stargate-related plot in addition to the romantic aspect and should not be confused with PWP works.

Large Works (>40,000 words)
Stand-alone, complete stories and serials that are 40,000 words or longer. Serials must be complete (no WIP).

Short Works (<1,000 words)
Short Works typically have fewer than 1000 words. Some examples of short works are:
Drabble - A "drabble" is a story that is exactly 100 words long.
Filksong - A filksong takes the lyrics of a popular song and re-writes them in a Stargate-way.
Poem - Poetry is an original work having a Stargate theme.
Vignette - A vignette is a short story consisting of a single scene. Vignettes are typically fairly short in length.
